Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th April 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was an only child. Scott was a student at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs as she was taking classes in secondary education. The hope was to become an English High School teacher. After 3 years of working as an aide to the teacher and a student her goal of becoming a high school English teacher fell through. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word performer who performed her work in live poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by both. Then, during Roots' performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. Additionally, she was able to learn about performing arts through the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was the first artist to be signed to Hidden Beach Recordings.
